Massive Award News

Robert Mitchell 3iO — Winners Best Jazz Album 2009 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards (BBC Radio1) — for their debut 3iO album The Greater Good (33jazz).

Jan KopinskiAmazing news for this awesome trio (oops sorry 3io), up against some great competition Robert and the guys have won Gilles Petterson's yearly Worldwide Music Award show with the Best Jazz Album Of The Year.

This is great news as we are all so proud of the quality of the project and this is just the iceing on the cake for us and im sure for the guys, many thanks for involveing us in the process heres looking forward to the next one

Here's yet another review of this exceptional project this time from Phil Johnson of the Independant Newspapper

Can trip-hop do bebop, with Massive Attack rather than George Gershwin providing a successful jumping-off point for dreamy jazz grooves?

A fabulous version of MA's "Teardrop", with the melody line taken as a bowed bass solo by Tom Mason, answers in the affirmative. Mitchell's superbly fluid band contribute to what is proving to be a golden age for the piano trio with a really striking debut. It starts all baroque, then stretches out through drummer Richard Spaven's broken-beat rhythms into an English po-mo style.

Pick of the Album: 'Teardrop': double-bass inventions on an anthemic theme

Short trip to Los Angeles for a one off Post Grammy Party Show with Leona. Great short show with full band, the crowd loved it.

Gary Moore UK Tour, refreshed from our short break after the German run we started in Folkestone followed by Brighton, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow, Sheffield, Cambridge, Norwich, Bristol, Wolverhampton, Manchester and London. Great run of shows with the highlight for me being a sold out show at one of my favourite venues Hammersmith what a great way to end a tour. Off to Spain next.

Album CoverWith the completion of Seb Pipes new album Shoot For The Stars the project has been receiving some excellent press and reviews. The following is a quick review by Ian Mann

Shoot For The Stars by Seb Pipe

Reviewed by: Ian Mann

A bold and very respectable album that clearly demonstrates that Pipe has intelligence, ambition and potential.

This latest release on the Jazz Services imprint in co-operation with 33 Records features the young alto saxophonist Seb Pipe and his band Life Experience. Pipe is joined by similarly talented young musicians Arthur Lea (piano and Fender Rhodes), Phil Donkin (acoustic and electric bass), and George Hart (drums).

Pipe is interested in world/folk musics as well as jazz and he also has a thorough grounding in European classical music. The eleven tunes on this album reflect this, covering a wide geographical and stylistic range in a largely original programme. Pipe’s music has won the endorsement of the influential Guardian jazz critic John Fordham who has provided the album’s informative liner notes.

Life Experience start their musical journey in Japan with “Yonetsu” or “Residual Energy”. Hart’s odd meter drum groove provides the platform for Pipe’s tightly concentrated alto explorations. Lea and Donkin both deploy the electric versions of their respective instruments adding a kind of counter groove to Hart’s drum pulse. It’s tricky, interesting stuff that ingeniously morphs into “Yo Tico” the band’s take on the classic Brazilian dance tune “Tico Tico” written by Zequinha de Abreu in 1917. Pipe takes his inspiration from a recorded version by the great Charlie Parker and adds a few twists of his own. The mood is celebratory and features a pounding solo from Lea on acoustic piano and some dynamic drum fills from Hart.

December 2008

In the studio we have just started the next phase of improvements due for completion in January many thanks to all of our clients old an new for an amazing 2008 and looking forward too 2009, look out for shots of the new changes in the new year.

Shows with LEONA both UK and international. SWEDEN for TV's SWEDISH IDOL GERMANY, END OF YEAR REVIEW SHOW and UK performing RUN at THE ROYAL VARIETY, Finally New York, for Radio Z100's Christmass JINGLE BALL show at Madison Square Garden and then the DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW. Finishing of the Year and starting 2009 a performance in POLAND at KRAKOW's NEW YEARS EVE celebrations.

Mastering sessions for both GEOF EALES and SEB PIPE the end of the line its all upto the labels now both artists are over the moon with the finished product.

November 2008

More shows with LEONA in the UK, guest appearances on the X-FACTOR for a stunning performance of her version of RUN by Snow Patrol. Followed by shows in LA for the AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS, GERMANY for the BAMBI's where she won the "SHOOTING STAR" award and a LIVE radio road show for SWISS RADIO.

Keep an eye out for this one, recently signed to SONY/BMG UK is STEVE APPLETON (website / myspace). Steve has been in tracking some piano parts for future use, his debut single is out mid April 2009 with his first album shortly there after.

Geof Eales At WorkAnother project nearing completeion with GEOFF EALES mixing his latest Trio project titled "MASTER OF THE GAME" which is being released on EDITION RECORDS early in 2009, watch out for this one, Geoff is without doubt one of the UK's best piano players nestled in an exceptional trio, samples online now.

Yet another really well received project from Geof, here are a small selection of reviews that the album has received.

Trio At Rest"Reninvention is in the air these days and pianist Geoff Eales has caught the bug. His "Master of the Game" (Edition) casts off any emulation of others as he aims for a personal (and successful) rebirth. All eight pieces are his, magisterial bassist Chris Laurence and drummer Martin France the expert midwives" (Jazz UK)

"Eales, truly the master of the game, has never sounded more vigorous or lucidly lyrical" (Manchester Evening News)

"Eales brings a lot of life and experience to a hook-filled piano trio album which has its fair share of drive and quiet swing-funk" (The Jazz Breakfast)

"The overriding sense on Master of the Game is of a famously eclectic pianist who's become a master of his influences and begun to speak in a voice that is distinctively and unmistakably his own" (Jazzwise)

I will leave the final thought on this project from session engineer Mat who said this post mix "Geoffs trio included 3 players of unreal natural ability and improv skill, which made the session great fun and a pleasure to work on. The intricacy of the songs flow so well, seamlessly section by section. The name of this album really sums these guys up, Masters Of the Game." Nuff Said.

The end of the road is nigh with SEB PIPE currently mixing his latest project "SHOOT FOR THE STARS" schedueld for relase around March 2009. Samples online soon

October 2008

He said "it was great to be working with some young guys who were not afraid to take on such intense and technical pieces of music whilst adding differnt flavours like calypso and some Romanian elements. More on the session as it progresses.

RENZO JAZZ UPDATES.

Alex Hutton CoverAlex Huttons new album is now out on 33 JAZZ.

Featuring Alex Hutton (Piano(Myspace)), Mike Janisch (Bass(Myspace)) and Enzo Zirilli (Drums(Myspace)). Recorded and mixed by Mat Collis at Koolworld this work is already receiving some excellent press, the following review appeared in the Guardian.

Alex Hutton Trio, Songs from the Seven Hills(33Jazz) 4 Stars

John Fordham The Guardian, Friday July 18 2008

Alex Hutton is a British pianist who once received the rare accolade of a generous tribute from the late Ronnie Scott - but since Scott died in 1996 and this is only Hutton's second album, it's evident that his career didn't boom. But Hutton went to study in New York in 1994, toured with the soul/jazz band Boy On a Dolphin, and then kept his head down in the UK as a sideman for anybody and everybody, including Jim Mullen, Guy Barker and Gilad Atzmon. Like Cross That Bridge, Songs from the Seven Hills has a narrative design rather than just being a string of tunes, and in this case it addresses the pianist's roots in the landscapes of his native Yorkshire (it's subtitled The Sheffield Suite), the punk-folk of the Stranglers, regular piano jazz, and English classical music. Though the leader is sometimes a little over-tempted in his solos by the descending triplet figures of McCoy Tyner, and a country-gospelly roll reminiscent of early Keith Jarrett colours his slow pieces, Hutton does justify Scott's faith in a scattering of improvisations that join an affectingly hooky melodic knack to a rich and freewheeling impressionism as his speculations open out. Hutton often favours the Esbjörn Svensson method of broaching a simple melody and progressively and hypnotically thickening it, and he's aided in this by the alert drumming of Enzo Zirilli and the dynamic bass-playing of expat American Michael Janisch. Janisch is Scott LaFaro-like in his countermelodic exchanges with Hutton on the initially spacey Surprise Corner, and his bowed playing is majestic on the tumbling, bell-pealing Seventh Hill. Hutton gets rhapsodic and Jarrett-like on the finale. It's a set that will stand high among UK jazz achievements at the year's end.

More reviews for Thoe Travis's new album DOUBLE TALK the first is from SONICCURIOSITY please use this LINK.

The second review comes from Norway, the following is taken from TARKUS MAGAZINE ISSUE 44.

The sax player Theo Travis has during the last ten years positioned himself as a well-reputed musician who has played with such varied artists as Gong, David Sylvian, Anja Garbarek, The Tangent and Porcupine Tree. His strength has always been his ability to sound convincing regardless of genre, and he always expands his own horizon and dares to challenge the often jazz-oriented sound of the saxophone. Double Talk is the follow-up to the fine debut album Earth To Ether, and in an elegant way combines elements from his work within both jazz and rock. He mixes and experiments turns up with his own personal combination of "progressive jazz", which sounds like no one else. Travis is joined by a great bunch of musicians on drums, Hammond and guitar, and none other than the old fox Robert Fripp contributes with his characteristic "soundscapes", which contributes to expanding the sonic palette. The tracks are varied in expression, and even though each stand well on their own and can stylistically we far apart, they still sound as part of a whole. Travis manages in an exceptional way to combine a minimalist rock attitude with post-bob jazz. He manages to make a few tones stand out with strength in an ensemble setting, and his lyrical qualities and attention in connection with details is impressive. Many of the tracks are lingering with a great sense of space, which are conjured up by layers of flute, sax with or without effects, swirling organ, tight jazz chords, plus wonderful textures from Fripp. In all its beautiful simplicity, this demands a lot of hard work, and it is evident that Travis (and Fripp) knows what it takes to make a few "simple" tones create atmosphere, and that this is just as difficult as playing more complex music. But Travis et co. also take time to rock it with an unexpected cover of the Pink Floyd classic "See Emily Play". Purists may turn their nose up at the fact that wah-wah sax is replacing Barrett's characteristic vocal, but Travis comes out on top. The last track, "Portobello '67" also stands out. In many ways, this is a journey back to the sixties with its charming pop approach with light Hammond and guitar. A beautiful ending to a great album. Sven Eriksen

December 2007

Live shows this month have included system design and installation for Capital Sound Hire, for shows at the Hammersmith Apollo with GOGOL BORDELLO, this proved to be a very energetic and dynamic show with the crowd going absolutely wild. While the second day saw Mexican Guitar SupremosRODRIGO Y GABRIELA, what can I say about this, two musicians no band no backing tracks yet a truly rhythmic and dynamic performance. Gabriela managing to make her six string acoustic generate a sub kick that a classic Roland 808 drum machine would have been proud of this combined with Rodrigo superb playing, truly excellent songs and a well installed MEYER MICA PA system had the crowd jumping and salsaing all over Hammersmith.

This month also saw the Northern European / Scandinavian launch of Leona Lewis's Album in Stockholm Sweeden. The event was held in Stockholms Grand Hotel, with the Ballroom providing a very dramatic backdrop for the show, with production overseen by UK based Steve Spencer and lighting design by Syian UK. Dave specked a DV Dosc system comprising 6 DV's and 2 218 subs each side, all controlled from a DIGIDESIGN VENUE running an array of plugins. The show was yet again such an awesome display of how truly talented Leona is, I am sure that in the coming years she will without doubt establish herself as one of the most outstanding female singers to emerge from the UK.

Other recent shows for Leona have included Children In Need, The Paul O'Grady Show, Harpers Bazaar Private Party, Oxford Street Lights, anda charity event at the Roundhouse in Camden for the RAYS OF SUNSHINE group an organization that helps grant wishes for children with serious illnesses. Leona definitely made one little girls dreams come true with this show.

During the second half of November we finished installing our new digital personal monitoring system by Hearback Systems USA. Completely integrated within PROTOOLS the system allows us to feed 8 individual sends to small personal mixers allowing each musician to create their own personal mix without effecting anyone else. The quality of the system is truly outstanding as a digital feed is maintained all the way up to the personal mixers. Comments from initial sessions has been excellent with all users finding the system easy to use and truly impressed with the audio quality. For further technical info check out our good friends and the UK dealers at STIRLING SYCO.

Finishing off the month we have the Cadillac Kings back in for their second album with us. The first album we recorded received rave reviews, and early signs from this session of completely original tracks will again see the Kings follow the same successful route. With a line up featuring usual members Mike Thomas(vocals), Mike Adcock(piano/accordion), Roy Webber(drums), Gary Potts(harmonica/vocals) and new members Mal Barclay(guitar) and T C Copp(double bass).

Mid Novemeber had Dave and Mat on the road with Gary for the second half of the UK tour. Following on from the Hendrix Show and the Scandinavian shows saw the continuation of the live recordings. The full eight show tour covered Cambridge, Grimsby, Birmingham, Preston, Bradford, London, Nottingham and Brighton.

These shows provided some excellent material and also proved that the quality of sound from a live show can still be of use, yes there is definitely an issue with spill especially with a loud artist like Gary but that for me is also part of the moment and vibe. I think that a lot of today's true fans are more than happy to suffer a little spill to truly experience the performance.

April 2007

Nick & ZadSince the start of the year and our refit we have been busy with a wide range of work. April has been a hectic month for us, the start of the month has seen the completion of the recording phase of Nick Kelly's first album due for release on 33 Records later this year. Over 4 days of recording we compiled 8 excellent tracks with the trio of Nick, Zad Adda and Marius Rodrigues. Over the four days we utilized all of our recording spaces to capture the truly unique feel of these individuals.

Marius DrumsMarius, on a brand new and recently imported Brazilian handmade kit, has an amazingly diverse style with an equally dramatic dynamic range. Zad's playing complements Marius in control and expression, leaving Nick to place the final pieces of this excellent musical jigsaw. With the entire session was captured on Protools at 24bit / 96khz to truly capture the dynamics of this talented trio.

Songwriter Peter Mathews latest album is nearing completion, featuring vocalists Joan Viskant, Rachel More and Renzo Murrone. This project has been in progress since the end of 2006, due to the very busy and conflicting schedule’s of all those taking part. Yet we have managed to maintain a very high level of consistency throughout with the help of the total recall ability of the studio. Mixing of the third and final part of this project is due for completion during May.
